Therapy for Children & Adolescents

Therapy is an important, and often first-line intervention for children and adolescents who are struggling with emotional or behavioral problems. However, young children are not usually as equipped as adults are to talk openly and insightfully about their problems during therapy sessions. What makes therapy even more challenging is that many children and teenagers will be reluctant to engage at all when they are asked to open up to an adult stranger, often out of fear. It takes a delicate and sensitive approach, along with patience and at least a little bit of charisma, for a child and adolescent therapist to successfully connect with clients. At North Star Psychiatry, our therapists have proven many times over that they have this gift in spades!

Therapy for Young Adults

Psychotherapy, which is often called “talk therapy” or “therapy,” can be a powerful tool in treating young adults with mental illness. Not only can medications (chemicals) change brain chemistry, but therapy can also change a person’s brain in a favorable way. There are different types of therapy, including cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), psychodynamic therapy, interpersonal therapy, supportive therapy, and others.

Therapy sessions can be done individually or in groups. Family therapy is often recommended when it is apparent that family dynamics need to be addressed. At North Star Psychiatry, our therapists are skilled in using an eclectic blend of therapeutic modalities to help young adults who are struggling with their mental health.
